BEYOND FOOD & NUTRITION:

FOUNDATIONAL APPROACHES

MODALITIES, MOVEMENTS, AND CONCEPTS THAT INFORM MY WORK

  • Originating from Dr. Peter Levine's work, SE is a body-oriented model to support individuals to heal "stuck" physiological trauma responses. I apply SE concepts to support body awareness and regulation, especially related to body sensations involved in eating.

Note: I am not yet a certified SE practitioner (SEP), however do apply these concepts where appropriate, in alignment with my current training (Beginning I, II, III, Intermediate I).

  • Developed by Stephen Porges, PhD, this concept highlights the importance of the autonomic nervous system, body states, and safety in determining our behaviors. Establishing safety and connection is one of my first and highest priorities!

  • Originally developed by Evelyn Tribole MS RD and Elyse Resch MS RD FADA CEDS-C, the intuitive eating model encourages a shift from following harmful diets to trusting the inherent wisdom of the body. I think it's OK to go slow with this one, and I like to adapt this concept depending on how connected you are (or want to be)!

  • The Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH) and Health at Every Size (HAES) movements strive to dismantle weight-centered medical care and health policy. One foundational notion, that weight and size are not primary determinants of health, encourages us to focus on (and advocate for) other ways of finding health and wellness that are much more effective than perpetuating weight focus and stigma.

  • I am committed to holding space and taking action to minimize suffering from inequities, injustices, and oppression. I acknowledge my privileges, and work to challenge harmful, discriminatory norms for and with my clients. I celebrate identities and practice with cultural humility - centering one's lived, human experience. In such a tumultuous climate, anti-oppression work is more critical than ever.

  • Supports access and alignment with Self; views individuals as having multiple "parts" that serve valuable purposes

  • Strong focus on skills to support emotion regulation and developing more effective patterns and behaviors

  • Promotes psychological flexibility through accepting one's present experience and committing to action aligned with one's values.

  • Supports shifting negative thought patterns which influence emotions and behaviors

PRACTICE PILLARS

NUANCE

There are so many opinions out there about what to eat and how to be in a body, I know. We’re inundated with nutrition info on the daily. Sometimes, even the messaging of wellness culture, eating disorder treatment, or other well-meaning providers can feel really loud and overwhelming: “ALL FOODS FIT!” or “DIETS DON’T WORK!” or “LOVE YOUR BODY!” Those sentiments are totally valid, and I bet that still leaves you feeling lost in another set of ‘shoulds’. I recognize it isn’t that easy - the answer can’t be another new, rigid belief system. We’ll work through the mud that is diet culture, wellness culture, and recovery culture - there are lots of ways through.

COLLABORATION

Do I have degrees in nutrition? Yes. Do I know a few things about nutrients? Sure. Am I going to give you a prescription for how to live your life? Nope. (Sorry, not sorry - you’ll see, I promise).

I get it — you want to know what’s best and you want to feel better. This work is more complicated than you might think - there’s no “right” way with eating, and I’m not actually the expert on your life and your needs. Believe it or not, you are! Together —- using our combined wisdom — we’ll find a way of eating and moving that aligns with your values, needs, and wellness.

RESPECT

I honor your story, your needs and your process, with humility - always. It may sound daunting, but our relationships to food and our bodies are indefinite - there isn’t a finish line. We each have our own unique body systems, genetics, sensory needs, traumas, feelings, values, and experiences. It’s just as critical to explore identity, culture, community, and social systems - we’ve gotta go there. Choosing to honor and respect these experiences is foundational to healing. I like to think about our eating behaviors as a window into what our bodies are experiencing, needing, feeling, and how we’re functioning - both inside and out in the world. Bodies are wild! Bodies are incredible! Respect the magic!

EMPOWERMENT

I admire my clients endlessly. Truly - seeking support is already a sign that the strongest parts of you are coming forward. To stay with the process and all that comes with it - wow, incredible. I am so grateful to witness such authentic reflection, self-discovery, and evolution. This isn’t just about nutrients, y’all, this is about removing the blockade that is food and body dissatisfaction, distrust, and self-doubt that prevents us from being who we are meant to be in this world. I am constantly reminded of what magnificence humans are truly capable of in unity and community. You deserve to be witnessed and appreciated for all that you are. I will always be here to remind you of that.

ABOUT CARLY (she/her)

YOUR DIETITIAN & ADVOCATE ALONG THE WAY

Healing is hard, and you aren’t alone.

My work as a dietitian and nutrition therapist is a direct result of my own comprehensive (and ongoing!) healing process. Finding my voice and my heart wouldn’t have been possible without specialized support, without community, and without safety. My own experiences of embracing queerness and neurodivergence have deepened my practice values of safety, autonomy, and authentic connection, to provide trauma-attuned, somatically-guided care for individuals and families. I keep it real: There is no one way in wellness, there is no “normal.” Although it may feel uncertain and VERY messy at times, I promise you are already the expert on you; and I’m here to help in your process of reclamation. But trust, I won’t stop there. Allyship just isn’t enough — when I’m not providing direct support, I’m dedicated to learning, reflection, and taking action to change the ways we approach nutrition care in our communities.

“YOUR BODY IS THE PIECE OF THE UNIVERSE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN”

-GENEEN ROTH

The notion of knowing, honoring, and nourishing your body may be far from familiar; but that doesn’t mean it isn’t attainable. Our bodies arrive into the world ready to trust and receive care. As we grow and age, it’s all too easy to lose sight of our internal wisdom, and we come to adopt external suggestion and pressure to influence our patterns of eating. Our bodies learn to adapt to stress in innovative ways; sometimes at high cost. We must learn to settle back into our bodies, as they are destined to be.

Translated into practice: A movement toward rediscovering a relationship to food and body that is connected, gentle, flexible, balanced, varied, exciting, fun, permissive, trusted and nourishing.

Critical bonus: We’ll also spend plenty of time disbanding diet culture, developing new language and narratives, and cultivating body trust & respect.

How: As a dietitian, I like to reference a variety of approaches and other therapeutic modalities as we explore relationships to food and body. These are by no means a replacement for therapy, or equivalent to supports provided by those disciplines. That said, some of my favorite lenses include: SE (Somatic Experiencing), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), IFS (Internal Family Systems), and DIRFloortime. I also pull from Polyvagal Theory, Intuitive Eating, Health at Every Size, and the told wisdom from the humans I encounter!
